A new study suggests that prescription drugmakers can offer a cheaper alternative to Nexium, the little blue pill that’s helped millions of people over the last decade, for some of the same underlying health conditions, says a new study.
Nexium, used to treat heartburn, stomach ulcers, and acid reflux, is often the first-line treatment for these ailments, says, who conducted a study on consumers.
While Nexium and Prilosec, the brand-name drug from Pfizer, offer similar cost-saving benefits, the findings only apply to the prescription drug that’s often the most cost-effective in the US market, the researchers said.
“We can’t use that as an excuse to make a generic version of the brand-name drug Nexium,” says, a senior editor at the Journal of the American Medical Association.
But the new study, presented at a conference in Chicago on Tuesday, is one of the first to study the cost-savings risks associated with prescription Nexium, which is widely available in the US. While Nexium is now being taken as a 20mg capsule, it can cost up to $5 per capsule, whereas Prilosec is priced at $20.
A New York-based research firm has found that the prescription Nexium is less expensive than Prilosec, the brand-name drug from Pfizer.
“The price of Nexium is much lower than Prilosec,” says, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Wisconsin who has studied the same drug.
A comparison of the price of a 20mg dose of Prilosec and Nexium, which is made by Pfizer, found that Prilosec costs less than Nexium, about $1.75 per 30mg tablet, compared with about $1.76 per 30mg tablet, in comparison with about $2.16 per 30mg tablet, the study authors write.
But the researchers’ analysis showed that prescription Nexium, which has been available since 2001, costs about $5 to $10 per 30mg tablet, compared with $9 to $11 per 30mg tablet, and that the cost of prescription Prilosec, which has been available since 2003, is about $1.50 per tablet, compared with $7 per tablet, the study authors write.
The results, from the study, come after the study was stopped by the US Food and Drug Administration.
“Our findings are in line with other studies,” says Dr. Peter B. D’Agostino, a professor of medicine at the University of Florida School of Medicine and a professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
In 2012, the FDA said that it would not approve a new prescription for Prilosec, the brand-name drug from AstraZeneca.
“That was because the drug did not come in that form, so we needed to have a form to make the drug available,” says Dr. D’Agostino, who has published more than 100 research papers and articles about the benefits and risks of Nexium. “And there was no other form that would have been available to us to use in that way,” he adds.
“When we were looking at the price, the number one thing was just to make a generic version of the drug, and then the price would have gone down,” he says.
But the study’s authors say that the price of Prilosec, which is made by Pfizer, is lower than that of Nexium.
“Our study shows that prescription Nexium, which is available in the US as 20mg capsules, is significantly less expensive than Prilosec, which is available in the UK,” they conclude.
“The other thing that is going to be a bit more interesting is that this study was not a single study,” adds Dr. D’Agostino.
