To treat symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux, you have several over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription options to choose from. Medications for heartburn and acid reflux provide either fast acting or long-term relief from symptoms. In this article, we will be looking at three different classes of OTC medications indicated for treatment of heartburn and discuss their similarities and differences.

PPIs: What are Nexium and Prilosec?

(esomeprazole) and (omeprazole) are part of a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). They work by reducing the amount of stomach acid made by glands in the lining of your stomach and are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or frequent heartburn that occurs 2 or more days per week. Because these medicines take time to work, PPIs like omeprazole and esomeprazole are not designed to treat infrequent heartburn or be an immediate relief for symptoms. H2-Blocker: What is Pepcid (Famotidine)?

(famotidine) is a histamine-2 receptor blocker. It works by reducing the amount of acid the stomach produces and is mainly used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. Pepcid is also widely used to treat GERD and other conditions in which acid backs up from the stomach into the esophagus, causing heartburn symptoms.

Antacids: What is Tums (Calcium Carbonate)?

(calcium carbonate) is an antacid. It provides fast relief by immediately neutralizing the heartburn-causing acid in your esophagus and stomach on contact. Tums is mainly used to relieve heartburn, sour stomach, acid indigestion, and upset stomach associated with these symptoms.

To purchase Tums, check out Amazon for.

Are Pepcid, Nexium, Prilosec, and Tums the Same Thing?

No. While they all can help treat acid reflux, they work differently and therefore have different use cases. Pepcid and Nexium/ belong to two different drug classes. Pepcid is an H2-blocker and Nexium/Prilosec are PPIs, and though they both decrease stomach acid, they work in different ways in your body. Both classes are used to treat and prevent recurrence of stomach and duodenal ulcers. Pepcid is mainly useful in relieving mild, infrequent heartburn (less than 2 episodes per week) while Nexium/Prilosec is useful in managing frequent heartburn that occurs 2 or more days a week.

Tums, on the other hand, belongs to a separate drug class. It is an antacid. It goes to work in seconds to start neutralizing gastric acid in the esophagus, where the pain of heartburn starts. It keeps working as it dissolves, going to work fast to relieve the pain of heartburn. Because of its rapid mechanism of action, Tums is most appropriate for mild, infrequent heartburn (less than 2 episodes per week) and is not effective alone for moderate heartburn symptoms (at least once per week).

A pharmaceutical company has agreed to pay $1.3 billion to settle allegations it illegally marketed a prescription-only drug that has been used for more than six decades without warning, authorities said Tuesday.

The pharmaceutical giant, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, said it had paid $4.8 million and agreed to pay $1.4 million to settle the lawsuit.

The settlement is the latest effort by the pharmaceutical giant to extend the coverage of a popular cancer drug, Nexium, that has been linked to deaths.

The suit was filed Monday in U. S. District Court in Manhattan and the company said in a statement that it "respectfully disagrees with the judgment of the court and will not condone any practices that could endanger the public health."

Nexium, which treats stomach and esophagus problems caused by heartburn, esophageal ulcers, and other stomach disorders, was originally developed as a treatment for acid reflux disease.

It has been used for more than five decades without warning. In 2012, the FDA warned that its use could be linked to dangerous drug interactions and a growing number of reports of heart attacks and strokes.

The lawsuit said that Nexium is not approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration, but was manufactured in other countries as well, such as India, and was marketed through the drug company Glaxo.

Glaxo and other pharmaceutical companies had a duty to disclose all risks to the public, including that of Nexium and other drugs, and would seek FDA approval only if it was determined that the risks were not severe enough to justify the use of the drug.

The drug company is alleged to have marketed Nexium for more than six decades without a warning from the FDA, and had a duty to inform consumers of the risks to the public.

The suit, filed Monday in the U. District Court in Manhattan, claims that the company failed to disclose the risks and failed to warn the public of the risks of Nexium use.

A U. judge in Philadelphia rejected the case on Tuesday, saying that the company had failed to show the FDA's role in the conduct in warning about risks.

Glaxo and other pharmaceutical companies are accused of illegally marketing Nexium to customers and patients for a variety of reasons, including the use of Nexium for heartburn and other serious medical conditions.

In 2015, the company was ordered to pay $1.3 billion for Nexium, while in 2010 it was charged with several counts of illegally marketing the drug. The company also agreed to pay $1.4 million to settle lawsuits that alleged that Nexium "did not warn the public of the serious risks associated with this drug and did not provide adequate warnings."

A federal judge in New York ordered the company to pay $1.3 million to settle lawsuits related to the drug.

In a statement to CNN's

On Monday, the company said that it "respectfully disagrees with the judgment of the court and will not condone any practices that could endanger the public health."

The lawsuit was filed by U. District Judge Richard M. Schipper Jr.

Schipper said that the company's decision to settle is a result of "bad faith" allegations by Glaxo that it engaged in practices that violated FDA regulations, including its marketing of Nexium, and that it knew about risks.

The company, which was paid $4.8 million, said in a statement that it "respectfully disagrees with the judgment of the court and will not condone any practices that could endanger the public health."

Glaxo's lawsuit names the company as one of only three companies that had "a duty to inform the public of the risks associated with this drug."

A spokeswoman for Glaxo said the company "is taking all necessary steps to strengthen our business relationships with our customers and the public by providing appropriate and reliable pharmaceutical information."

The settlement comes amid the recent push by the pharmaceutical industry to limit drug sales and marketing of prescription drugs.

The settlement will be filed in federal court in New Jersey, where the company is based.

A spokesman for Glaxo said the company has not yet made any statement as to how the settlement will affect the company.

The pharmaceutical company is not expected to comment on the case.

Nexium is a prescription medication used to treat frequent heartburn. It can be bought over the counter at pharmacies and online through a variety of online pharmacies. Nexium is one of the top selling prescription medications in the United States, and is often recommended for people who have trouble swallowing pills.

For over-the-counter relief from frequent heartburn, Nexium is available as a generic version called Nexium-D and as an over-the-counter version called Nexium-R. The generic version is also a prescription medication that is sold in various forms. Nexium-D is typically sold in two strengths (1mg and 2.5mg), and Nexium-R is usually sold in three strengths (5mg, 7.5mg, and 10mg).

It is important to note that some people may experience side effects when taking Nexium-D. These may include increased heartburn and heartburn that are not controlled by medications such as Nexium, which can cause serious gastrointestinal problems such as stomach ulcers and other problems that can be life-threatening. Taking the medication with a high-fat meal or on an empty stomach may cause an upset stomach.
